how to use a dog choker chain

To use a dog choker chain (also known as a

check chain or correction collar) correctly, it must be assembled and placed so that it releases pressure immediately when you let go of the leash. If put on backwards, it can remain tight, which is dangerous and ineffective for training.

1. Assemble the Collar
Hold one of the end rings and drop the chain through it to create a loop. This turns the straight chain into a sliding collar.
2. Orient the “P” Shape
Before putting it on your dog, hold the collar up in front of you.
  • For walking on the Left (standard): The chain should form the letter “P”. The “top” part of the P (the lead attachment) should come over the top of the dog’s neck toward you.
  • For walking on the Right: The chain should form a number “9”.
3. Place It on the Dog
  • Position: Slide the loop over the dog’s head. It should sit high on the neck, just behind the ears and under the jawline, rather than low on the shoulders.
  • Check the Release: Pull the “live ring” (the one attached to the leash). When you release it, the chain should immediately slide back and become slack. If it stays snug, it is on backwards.
4. Give Proper Corrections
  • Snap and Release: Use a quick “pop” or “flick” of the wrist followed by an immediate release.
  • No Constant Tension: Never maintain steady pressure or pull the dog off the ground. The goal is a momentary signal, not actual choking.
Important Safety Rules
  • Training Only: Never leave a choker chain on an unsupervised dog or use it as an everyday collar; it can snag on objects and cause accidental strangulation.
  • Proper Sizing: The collar should be long enough to fit over the widest part of the dog’s head with only 2–3 inches of extra chain hanging when pulled tight.
  • Health Risks: Be aware that improper use can damage a dog’s trachea, thyroid gland, or increase eye pressure. Many modern trainers recommend a front-clip harness as a safer alternative for dogs that pull.
